S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe) is an amino acid-like substance that is present in virtually all living organisms and is one of the most important compounds in metabolism.

Your body naturally produces SAMe from the amino acid methionine. While all body cells can create SAMe, the liver accounts for most of the endogenous production, which requires cofactors such as folate and vitamin B12. 

Besides folate and vitamin B12, the SAMe metabolism also involves vitamin B6. These nutrients are required to keep the SAMe cycle running and generate the amount of SAMe your body requires.

A deficiency of vitamin B6, B12, and folate, as well as dietary methionine, can affect the production of SAMe and impact its many essential functions. Different factors, such as oxidative stress, can interfere with SAMe metabolism, and lower levels have been found in various health conditions.
