Essential Youth L-Ergothioneine 5 mg
30 vegetarian capsules
Item catalog number: 02431
Ergothioneine is an amino acid that’s widely distributed throughout your body, but levels have been shown to decline as we age.1 Your body can’t produce it, so you must get it through your diet—it’s found in a variety of food sources, but with the highest concentrations in certain types of mushrooms.
This food-derived amino acid is thought to support long-term health through its free radical quenching and cell-protective properties.2 What’s more, the body has a highly specific mechanism to transport ergothioneine into your cells, suggesting it’s crucial for overall health.3,4
But if mushrooms aren’t your thing, you can still get the longevity-promoting benefits of ergothioneine with our innovative Essential Youth L-Ergothioneine formula. One daily capsule provides as much L-ergothioneine as 2 to 5 cups of white button mushrooms.
Benefits at a Glance:
Ergothioneine has been shown to delay telomere shortening due to oxidative stress.5 Why would you want to delay telomeres from shortening? Your telomeres are like protective caps at the end of your chromosomes. As time goes by, these telomeres shorten naturally, in step with your aging process. In a preclinical study, L-ergothioneine had a protective effect on telomere length and slowed the rate of telomere shortening under oxidative stress conditions.5
Low levels of ergothioneine in older adults have been linked with cognitive decline. In preclinical studies, ergothioneine showed beneficial neuroprotective properties from oxidative stress, supporting overall cognitive health.1
The cell-protecting properties of ergothioneine have also been linked to vision health.6
A 2020 clinical study found that higher ergothioneine levels were associated with healthier diets and with heart health.7
Add Essential Youth L-Ergothioneine to your wellness routine—fight oxidative stress and support a youthful you at the cellular level!

L-ergothioneine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative with potent antioxidant properties. Unlike common antioxidants that your body can synthesize, ergothioneine cannot be produced by your body - you must obtain it from dietary sources, primarily mushrooms. This has led researchers to propose it as a new vitamin, sometimes called the "longevity vitamin."
Your body has a dedicated transport protein (OCTN1) specifically for absorbing and distributing ergothioneine, suggesting it plays an important physiological role. Ergothioneine concentrations are highest in tissues exposed to significant oxidative stress - including red blood cells, liver, kidneys, and eyes.
Ergothioneine works through multiple mechanisms. As an antioxidant, it's particularly effective at neutralizing hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite. It protects mitochondria, helping maintain efficient energy production. Research suggests ergothioneine may help preserve telomere length, potentially extending cellular replicative capacity.
The anti-inflammatory properties contribute to anti-aging effects. Studies have shown it can reduce levels of inflammatory markers like TNF-alpha and IL-6 that increase with aging.
Population studies have found associations between higher ergothioneine intake and better health outcomes. One study found people in the highest quartile of dietary ergothioneine intake had significantly lower risk of cognitive decline. Research on cardiovascular health shows ergothioneine can protect endothelial cells and support healthy inflammatory responses.
Research suggests most people consume only 1-3 mg daily from diet, while therapeutic doses studied range from 5-25 mg daily. Mushrooms are by far the richest dietary source. Shiitake, oyster, and king oyster mushrooms contain particularly high levels.
Ergothioneine has an excellent safety profile with no serious adverse effects reported in clinical studies. Because it's a naturally occurring dietary compound, it works with your body's existing biochemistry. No significant drug interactions have been reported.
